Sandra Gordon

February 12, 1942 — February 19, 2025

Lexington

Sandra Gordon, long-time resident of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away peacefully and was welcomed into the arms of the Lord February 19th, 2025, at Lexington Regional Hospital with family by her side.

Sandy grew up on the family farm in rural Smithfield and attended school in Bertrand where she graduated from high school in 1959. Following graduation, she pursued nurses training at St. Elizabeth’s in Lincoln when fate brought her to meet her husband Donald S Gordon who was playing baseball for the Lincoln Chiefs. Sandy was an avid baseball fan from the time she was a child and loved to go to the ballpark and watch the games. The love of the game was a lifelong interest for her. The two became a couple and married October 28th, 1961. To this union were blessed three sons, Don, Tracy, and James. To these sons, they gave “roots and wings” as she would say. “Roots” with a family life of love, compassion, grounded to the earth. “Wings” by letting them go when it became time for them to go make a life

Sandy was a fantastic artist and had many awards and ribbons at the local and state level. As Sandy would say “I can’t draw a tree or a flower, just portraits” and did many portraits of family and friends. Sandy also created many signs around town and at Lakeside Country Club where the family had a long-time presence and passion for the game. You could often find her at the golf course watching her sons compete in high school, or Donald playing on weekends. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with her cousin and life-long companion Jim Schaefer. Sandy was a grandmother like no other. If there was an event or birthday she was there. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren well. They were all known as “Babes”, a term of endearment that will remain in their memories.

Sandy was a cornerstone of the Lexington community, known by most people in town from her ever-presence at local downtown clothing stores, Home Federal Savings, and Barmore’s Drug when she ultimately entered into a well-deserved retirement. She found great joy in getting together with all of her “coffee girls” weekly to socialize and stay up to date on everyone in the community. Her son’s always found comfort in knowing that everyone in town knew her and everyone in town watched out for her. She was an active member of St Ann’s Catholic church, a volunteer for Lexington Regional Health Center Auxiliary, and an annual participant and volunteer with the Dawson County Relay for Life. Sandy was a cancer survivor and would lend a compassionate ear to anyone afflicted with the disease.

Family left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are sons: Don (Susie) of San Diego CA; Tracy (Mori) of Lexington; and James of Phoenix AZ. Grand children: Zachary Gordon (Hannah), Rylan and Riggs of rural Smithfield; Morissa Chee(Chaney), Zacoby and Zefina of Kearney; Jacob Gordon(Maria), Jameson and Alicia of Camp Verde, AZ; Chris Yerke(Caitlyn), Ryan, Hayden, Hunter of Erie CO; Gretchen Yerke of San Diego CA; Jordan Krason(Becky), William and Lily of Gilbert AZ. Sister Pat Potter of Omaha, as well as close cousins, extended family across the country, and many dear friends.

Sandy was preceded in death by husband Donald, her parents Harold Schaefer, Robert and Mary Hanson, and infant grandson Malachi Chee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to American Cancer Society or Dawson County Cancer Care fund through the Lexington Community Foundation.
