Callaway

Norman Dean Johnson, 83, of Callaway, Nebraska, passed away on May 15, 2024, surrounded by family.

Norman was born on March 14, 1941, to Carl and Wilma Johnson of Callaway. He was the oldest of six siblings. Norman graduated from Callaway High School in 1959. He married Wanda Pracht on December 5, 1961. They lived in Callaway, Nebraska, where they farmed and raised four children – 3 sons and 1 daughter.

Norman was a simple man. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping- it was a love that was passed on to his children. When it rained, Norman would load the family up to go camping and fishing. Fishing became a passion and resulted in a few master angler awards. Norman’s other hobbies included shooting pool and playing cards.

He was dedicated to his family and to the land. He began farming with his dad, but continued with his son until he retired in 2017. His generosity, helpfulness, and knowledge of farming impacted so many lives in the surrounding area of Callaway.   Norman was an active member of the community. He was involved in the Coop board earlier in his life. When Norman and Wanda moved from the farm in 2007, they became influential participants in the Callaway Senior Center. They were both avid supporters of the Callaway Kite Flight, working diligently to keep it successful.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Wanda Johnson; his parents, Carl and Wilma Johnson; brother, Roger Johnson; and infant sister, Beverly Johnson. He is survived by his sisters, Sharon Chop of Ravenna, Deanna (David) Bridges of Missouri; brothers, Alan Johnson of Kearney, and Jerry Johnson of Grand Island.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Steve (Liz) Johnson of Burwell, Randy (Denise) Johnson of King George, VA, Julie Johnson of Callaway, and Jim (Linda) Johnson of Callaway; grandchildren, David (Azaria) Johnson, Brian (Anna Maria) Johnson, Douglas (Tori) Johnson, Kayla (Nick) Cleveland, Kara (Tony) Martin, Ken Johnson, Kelsey (Devon) Kurtz, Kraig Johnson, Kolin Johnson, Kassie (Steven) Wine, Kiah (Isaiah) Chase, Kameron (Elizabeth) Johnson, Korrin Johnson, Katrina Johnson, Kole Johnson, Katie Johnson, Clover (Randy) Heneger, Amanda (Matt) Huss, Christina (Joshua) Morales, Angel Johnson, Tiersa Johnson, Taylor Winners, Erin (Brytin) Woodward; and numerous great-grandchildren.
