Merle A. Glassmeyer, Sr., 92, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Welcov Assisted Living in Lexington. Merle was born October 16, 1925, in Wayne, Nebraska, to Edward H. and Minnie (Wittler) Glassmeyer. He attended school in Wayne, Nebraska. Merle joined the U.S. Army during WWII serving from April 14, 1945 until his honorable discharge on November 27, 1948. He then served with the Nebraska National Guard from June 20, 1948, until September 1, 1948. On November 30, 1945, he was united in marriage to Clara Ream in Wayne, Nebraska. Four children were blessed to this marriage; Michael, Edward, Merle, Jr., and Karen. They owned and operated the Gamble’s store in Lexington from 1973 to 1979. They moved to New Prague, Minnesota, where Merle worked for the city of New Prague. Following his retirement they moved to Youngtown, Arizona. When Clara’s health started to decline and they moved back to Lexington in 2004. On January 7, 2016, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara. Merle was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed woodworking, stained glass, working with metal and tinkering on motors. In his younger years he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. The most important thing to Merle was spending time with his family. Merle is survived by his children, Edward (Pat) Glassmeyer of Denver, Colorado, Merle, Jr. (Kamie) Glassmeyer of Lexington, Nebraska, and Karen (David) Jurincie of Denver, North Carolina; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd Glassmeyer of Norfolk, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Clara; son, Michael; and two brothers, Lowell and Donald. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne, Nebraska with Military Honors. Pastor Douglas Shelton will be officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 31, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington. Masonic Funeral Rites will be conducted by Thistle Lodge #61 at 6:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
