Melvin D. "Mel" Block, 80, of Lexington, Nebraska passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 14, 2025 at his home.
Mel was born on October 31, 1944, in Gothenburg, Nebraska, to Marvin O. and Dorrene J. (Bullock) Block. He was baptized and confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. Mel received his education and graduated from Cozad High School, graduating with the class of 1963.
Following high school, Mel farmed and ranched north of Cozad and Paxton, Nebraska. On May 11, 1971, Mel was inducted into the United States Army. He would spend the next 14 years, being a member of the Army, National Guard and Individual Reserve. Mel was the Administrative Technician for the Nebraska National Guard at Lexington. He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1985.
Mel was united in marriage to Linda Block in 1965, two children were blessed to this union: Caryn Jan and Martin Dean. Their marriage would later end in divorce. Mel was living in Lexington and was united in marriage to Marge Feik in 1970. One son was blessed to this union: Jeffery Dean. Their marriage would later end in divorce.
Following his time in the National Guard, Mel worked at Nebraskaland Truck and Travel Center in Lexington and would become manager for last eight years before retiring in 2007.
Mel was an avid sports fan, especially following the Raiders. He enjoyed golfing, and spending time with his family and friends. You could always find Mel at his favorite watering hole, drinking a cold Bud Light.
Survivors include his children, Caryn (Block) Johnson of Denver, Colorado, Martin Block of Denver, Colorado, ex- wife, Linda Block, and Jeff (Kylee Hoffmaster) Block of Lexington; his grandchildren, Austin Johnson and Allison Johnson of Denver, Colorado, Tyson (Maileigh Camp) Block of Lincoln, Kobe Block of Austin, Texas and Chayden Hoffmaster of Lexington; two great-grandchildren, Phoenix and Phoebe Camp of Lincoln; brother, Charles (Suzie) Block of Cozad; sister, DeAnn Steuben of Gothenburg; and special friend, Zelda O'Hanlon as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Besides his parents, Mel was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Marge and brother-in-law, Ted Stueben.
There will be a private Graveside Service at Cozad Cemetery.
A Celebration of Mel's life will be held at the Three 21 Tavern in Lexington at a later date.
Memorials are kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
