John S. LiaKos, 90 of Oconto, died Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway. John was born April 15, 1927, in Bridgeport, Nebraska, to Steve and Eva (Rietzenstien) LiaKos. He attended and graduated from Bayard High School in 1949. John joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War from September 22, 1950 until his honorable discharge on September 5, 1952. John was stationed in Alaska. Before being stationed in Alaska, John was united in marriage to Leenda Ann Maloley on August 27, 1950. The couple moved into Oconto, Nebraska in 1953. Three sons were blessed to this marriage: Michael, Nick & Norman. John and Leenda owned and operated the M & L Department Store until 1973 when he started working as a meat inspector until he retired. Following his retirement, John needed to stay busy and began working for Charles Horn and later operated Evans Feed in Oconto until 2015. John was a member of the Eagles Club, Elks Club, Lions Club, American Legion and a charter member of Oconto Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of AHEPA, a Greek Men’s Organization in Grand Island, Nebraska. John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting with friends and spending time with family. John is survived by his three sons, Michael (Darlene) LiaKos of Minden, Nebraska, Nick (Jane) LiaKos of Lawrence, Kansas and Norman (Pat) LiaKos of Curtis, Nebraska; step-mother Pota LiaKos of Kearney; one brother, George (Wanda) LiaKos of Phoenix, Arizona; two half-sisters, Georgia Bakas of Kearney, Nebraska and Theodora (John) Wolf of Kearney, Nebraska; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Leenda who preceded him in death on December 7, 2010; three brothers, Sam, Leo and Louie; two sisters, Angie Lee and Anna Kerns. Funeral Services will be Friday, November 17, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Orthodox Church in Kearney, Nebraska with The Reverend Christopher Morris, officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Military Honors at Maxwell, Nebraska. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 16, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. with Trisagion Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
