Jessie Fraser Meyer

MJessie F. Meyer, 87, of Elwood, Nebraska, formerly of Lexington, died on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Elwood Care Center. Jessie Fraser McGawn McCulloch was born December 11, 1930 at home in the quaint countryside village of Patna, Scotland to Alexander and Elizabeth McCulloch, not far from the birthplace of Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet. Jessie was the 5th of 8 children and was named after a great aunt. She was born and raise where the river Doon runs peacefully through this wee village alongside Patna Hill where she played as a child and attended Patna school. Her childhood was not without its challenges from War World II. She recalled watching bombs fall over the ship building village of Glasgow, carrying a gas mask to school and food and dry goods being heavily rationed. However, as a young adult, she loved ballroom dancing for which she won many awards while following her favorite bands around Great Britain. On August 14, 1954 Jessie married Alfred R. Meyer, a United States Airmen, station in Great Britain. They were married in Patna, Scotland and four years later, after Al’s honorable discharge from the Air Force, Al, Jessie and their daughter, Yvonne, retuned to America and moved to Kansas to help at the family farm. After a short-time in Kansas the family moved to Nebraska where they were blessed with three additional children; Ray, Deb, and Rick. Jessie was passionate about staying home with her children that she loved dearly, spending time with her grandchildren, engaging with activities and programs in her church including Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and decorating her home beautifully for holidays to bring her family together. Some important highlights of Jessie’s life include getting her and Yvonne’s U.S. citizenship, and getting her first-ever driver’s license at the age of 55. Jessie was very proud of where she came from. She passed on her Scottish heritage to her children by dancing the Highland Fling, playing the Mary Queen of Scots game, singing Scottish songs, and cooking and baking Scottish dishes. It was well known that hot tea was served daily at Jessie’s home. She never lost her beautiful Scottish accent.   Left to cherish her beautiful memory are her four children Yvonne (Dennis) Rickertsen of Lexington, NE, Ray (Judy) Meyer of Sun City West, AZ, Deb Farmer of Scottsdale and Rick (Mona) Meyer of Sun City, AZ; 14 grandchildren Kathryn Segovia of Menlo Park, CA, Christine Rickertsen of Austin, TX, Rebecca Rickertsen of Lincoln, NE, Nathan (Jacki) Meyer of Nebraska City, NE, Chad (Jessica) Meyer of McCook, Justin (Lauren) Meyer of Nebraska City, NE, Christopher (Amanda) Meyer of Wadsworth, OH, Julie Banning of Scottsdale, AZ, Katie (Alexander) Bellesteros of Omaha, NE, Kurt (Libby) Farmer of Omaha, NE, Allison Baker of Greeley, CO, Erin (Joey) Reynolds of Greeley, CO, Stacy (Steve) Aitken of Cozad, NE, Matt (Amanda) Welch of Cozad, NE, and 21 great-grandchildren. Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, of 57 years, her parents, 7 siblings, her many aunts, uncles, extended family, and special friends. Jessie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and a friend to many. Her family always came first. If her family was asked to describe her, it would be: delightful, loving, caring, and kind-hearted. She will be greatly missed. Celebration of Life Services will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with Pastor Dave Irwin, officiating.
