Gladys Rae Spangler, 87, of Broken Bow, Nebraska, formerly of Callaway passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Quality Senior Villages in Broken Bow.
Gladys was born on May 29, 1934, in Callaway, Nebraska to Roy W. and Alma R. (Vincent) Lichtenberger. She attended school in Callaway and graduated with the class of 1951.
She was united in marriage to Irvin W. Spangler on September 8, 1961, in Kearney, Nebraska. Three daughters came with the marriage, which he claimed as his own. They would add to their family when they welcomed a son, Wayne. They made their home in Callaway, before moving to Cozad, Nebraska, for a few years, where Gladys worked at the Jack & Jill Grocery store. In 1965, they returned to Callaway, where Gladys worked for the Callaway Market for many years. Gladys also drove the school bus for many years, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Gladys was a member of the United Methodist Church in Callaway. She was also a member of a quilting club, bowling league on Monday’s and enjoyed attending card club parties throughout the years.
She enjoyed embroidering, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and board games. She loved spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s school and sports activities.
Survivors include in her children, Cindy Brunken of Broken Bow, Teri (Rick) Buhlmann of Broken Bow, Candy (Duane) Thomas of Callaway, and Wayne (Kathy) Spangler of Manley; thirteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Sergun of Callaway and Shirley Pierce of Oconto; brother-in-law, Dean (Carol) Spangler of Oconto and sister-in-law, Marilyn (Fred) Morrison of O’Neill; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband Irvin in 2015; daughter, Robyn; granddaughter, Stephanie; sister, Mary Jane and her husband Gene Brestel; brother, Bill and his wife Dee Lichtenberger; son-in-law, Richard Brunken; brothers-in-law, Allyn Pierce, Allen Spangler and Albert Sergun.
The family is honoring Gladys’s wish for cremation. A time of sharing with friends and family will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway.
A Graveside Service will follow on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway with Pastor Shanon Williams, officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the Quality Senior Villages in Broken Bow or AseraCare Hospice.
