Gertrud “Gertie” Sund, 88, of Lexington passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She was born June 13, 1930 in East Prussia to Rudolf and Bertha Herzog. She attended school in Berlin, graduated from High School, and became an English translator. This is how she met Bill and fell in love. On July 7, 1948 she married William H. Sund Jr. in Berlin, Germany, by the German authority and July 8, 1948, by the American authority. The couple moved to the United States and made their home in Burwell and Franklin, Nebraska. Four children were blessed to this union: Jimmy, Tim, Denny and Patty. In 1951 they moved to Lexington, Nebraska, where they raised their family and lived their remaining years. For many years Gertie was a foster parent for many children and also housed and cared for several elderly people. Everyone that walked through her front door, she always made them feel welcomed and loved. In 1968, she and Bill started Sund Construction where she did the bookkeeping and they operated together until retiring in 1993. It was through Bill and Gertie that T.L. Sund Constructors, Inc. was founded. Gertie made sure every one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren received a special handmade sequin Christmas stocking. Each stocking took many hours and were made with such love. She enjoyed volunteering at the Church, knitting, gardening and was a wonderful German cook. She always enjoyed watching Nebraska Husker football on TV. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their activities and sporting events. The most important thing to Gertie was spending time with her family.
