Donnie Paul Pool, 89, of Overton, Nebraska, died Thursday November 2, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society-St. Johns, Kearney, Nebraska. Don was born June 25, 1928, in Kearney, to Joseph Albert and Frankie (Donalson) Pool and attended school in the Gibbon/Kearney area. He enlisted in the United States Marines on June 11, 1952, where he served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on June 10, 1955. After serving in the military, he returned home and began working for the Union Pacific Railroad. On September 21, 1957, Don married Delores Warta in Minden, Nebraska. Seven children were blessed to this marriage; Donnie Joe, Laura, Gene, Cindy, Cliff, Dale, and Tammie. The family lived in Cozad until 1970. The family then moved around quite a bit before settling in Overton in 1972. Don held many jobs in the Dawson County area, including: Orthman Manufacturing, Sorenson Construction, Evans Bakery, Progress Products Haymill, and Thomas Brennan Farms. After retiring, Don continued to mow the Dawson County Public Power substation which was across the street from his house until the last few years. Don was a Golden Glove Boxer for the VA. He received many Golden Glove trophies. He was also an expert roller skater. Don enjoyed gardening and raised a huge garden each year, which he generously shared with his neighbors and friends. He remained active and loved feeding various birds, squirrels, and rabbits that would come into the yard. He could be found getting his buckets filled at the local elevator weekly. No one was ever a stranger to Don. He loved storytelling and telling jokes to make people smile. Mostly Don loved to spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Delores of Overton, Sons: Donnie Joe Pool of Overton, Gene Pool of Sultan, Washington, Cliff (Shelley) Pool of Swisher, Iowa, Dale (Cyndi) Pool of New Hartford, Iowa; Daughters: Laura (Tom) Reinick of Elwood, Cindy (Jason) Crockett of St. John, Kansas, and Tammie (Paul) Reinick of Lincoln. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers, as well as maternal and paternal grandparents. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at 2:00 pm at the Reynolds Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with Pastor Daniel Sauer officiating. Burial, with Military Honors, will be held at the Overton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, November 13, 2017, from 5-7 pm at Reynolds Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington.
