Clifford D. Hemenway, 81, of Sumner, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Kearney Regional Health Center.
Clifford was born on December 24, 1940, to Eddie E. Hemenway and LeEtta (Wolf) Hemenway in North Platte, NE. He grew up on the Pawnee Springs Ranch at Maxwell, NE. He graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1960.
Clifford was united in marriage to Barbara K. McCauley on June 26, 1960, in Sumner, NE. This union was blessed with 4 children: Dalene, Cynthia, Eddie, and Brandon. Early in his marriage he worked at various farms and ranches in the North Platte area. In the 1970’s Cliff and his family moved to Sumner, NE, where he owned his own backhoe and trenching business and also worked security for Sperry New Holland. Later, he spent 25 years in maintenance at S-E-M schools where he retired in 2012.
During this time he also served on the Sumner Village Board including a stint as mayor, Village Fire Department, Commercial Club,Sumner Saddle Club, and volunteered with the Sumner Rescue Unit as an EMT. During this time he was also the maintenance director for the Village of Sumner.
He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Loup Valley Sam’s camping club. He kept active traveling and visiting his grandchildren and family in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, South Dakota, and Tennessee.
Cliff is survived by his wife Barbara, of Sumner; daughters, Dalene (Chris) Bricker of Westminster, Colorado and Cyndi (James) Hoyt of Lexington; sons, Ed (Theresa) Hemenway of Sumner and Brandon (Patricia) Hemenway of Henry, Tennessee; grandchildren, Dan (Kathy) Hoyt of Overland Park, Kansas, Aaron (Jennifer) Hoyt of Lexington, Ethan Hemenway of Henry, Tennessee, Caitlain Bricker of Westminster, Colorado, Joshua Bricker of Westminster, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Declan of Lexington; sister, Velma Craig of Cozad; brother, Larry (Carol) Hemenway of Paxton; brother-in-law, Richard (Karen) Torske of Stuart, Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and LeEtta Hemenway; and grandson, Austin Hemenway.
Funeral Services will be on Friday, April 29, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Sumner-East Campus with Pastor Ken Hutson, officiating. The Service will be live-streamed via the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home Facebook page.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. at the United Church of Sumner-East Campus.
Interment will be in the Sumner Cemetery at Sumner.
Memorials are suggested to the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department or to the Family for later designation.
