Lloyd Delbert Porter, 87, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
Lloyd was born June 11, 1923 at home near Lomax, Nebraska. He was the second child of four children born to Joseph and Laura Etta (Whisman) Porter. As a youth, he was raised on a farm and learned at an early age the value of hard work. Lloyd attended Eddyville High School through the 9th grade. He was most proud of earning the letter “E” in track. After leaving high school, he went to help his father.
On February 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Margaret Maxine Buschow. To this union, two sons and four daughters were born.
Lloyd and Margaret farmed in the Eddyville/Sumner area with the last 35 years being in Park Valley. Margaret passed away on July 22, 1984.
Lloyd married Bonnie Cummins on April 22, 1985. He continued farming for six years. Lloyd retired and they moved to Lexington in 1991. Farming was in his blood so for several years he made daily trips to the farm. Lloyd settled into his retirement years finding great contentment spending time with his family and friends. In pursuing his passion for wood working, he shared his projects with many, including his prized hand-crafted marble boards.
Lloyd could always be found at the Grand Generation Center playing pitch and shooting pool. If you were lucky, the guys would let you play, but don’t expect to win as it was cut-throat pitch. You can be sure that he reminisced about the good old days and how things have changed through the years.
After the death of Bonnie on January 23, 2009, Lloyd moved in with his daughter, Debby and Curt Benjamin. This heartfelt decision by Debby and Curt enriched his life with joy, peace, contentment and created wonderful memories. One of the most cherished memories was playing marbles with Lloyd and hoping that you could win a game every now and then.
On December 2, 2010, Lloyd fractured his hip and passed away, due to complications, on December 9, 2010, at the age of 87. Even on the last day of his life, he was working hard to get home.
Lloyd will always be remembered as a kind and generous man who loved his family and friends with all his heart. He touched the lives of many and will be missed.
He leaves to mourn two sons; Jerry Porter of Sumner, Nebraska; Dr. Richard & Gwen Porter of Ceresco, Nebraska; four daughters, JoAnn & David Currie of Lincoln, Nebraska; Dianne & Ryan Roberts of Plano, Texas; Deb Jones & Curt Benjamin of Lexington, Nebraska; and Judy & Tim Schroeder of Omaha, Nebraska; fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Lloyd is also survived by Bonnie's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members.
