Alfon J. Schwarz, 87, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
He was born June 16, 1923, in Gosper County, Nebraska to John Fred and Elizabeth (Schweinhuber) Schwarz. Alfon graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1942. He then entered the United States Army, serving his Country during WWII from February 16, 1943, until being Honorably Discharged on January 9, 1946.
Alfon was united in marriage to Linda Netzel at Lexington, Nebraska. Five children were blessed to this marriage; twins, Alfred & Eric, Vickie, Eunice and James.
Alfon worked many years for St. Ann’s School as their custodian. He worked for the City of Lexington as a cemetery caretaker and was in charge of St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery for many years. He was a wealth of information, as he knew where every grave was at St. Ann’s.
He was a faithful member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, where he served as past commander and was presently the Quartermaster for the past 40+ years, and St. Ann’s Cemetery Board.
Alfon enjoyed playing pool and visiting with his friends, playing cards, but most especially, being a proud grandpa and great-grandpa.

Twelve grandchildren & eight great-grandchildren: Christopher (Kristen) Schwarz of their children, Claire & Seth of Elwood, Nebraska; Scott Schwarz and his sons, Noah & Mason of Elwood, Nebraska; Brett (Doreen) Schwarz of Norfolk, Nebraska; Carrie Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; Julie Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; Matt (Sarah) Clements and their sons, Sam & Jack of Clarksville, Tennessee; Ben Clements of Anchorage, Alaska; Josh (Susie) Cantrell and their daughters, Avery & Harper of Omaha, Nebraska; Erin Cantrell of Kearney, Nebraska; Andrew Cantrell of Lincoln, Nebraska; Zack Schwarz of Fremont, Nebraska and Kate Schwarz of Omaha, Nebraska.
One daughter-in-law: Lisa (Terry) Hassman of Fremont, Nebraska
One sister-in-law: Lucy (Darrel) Buesing of Gothenburg, Nebraska
Alfon was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eric in 1998, and one brother, Emil in 2004.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 3, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington with Reverend Jorge Canela officiating.
Burial with Military Honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 2, 2010, from 6-7 p.m. with Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
Memorials are suggested to the Lexington Rescue Unit, the Heartland Military Museum or St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
