Sofia Amelia Jeffrey, 88, formerly of Lexington, Nebraska, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Pike’s Peak Care Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She was born August 7, 1921, in Wood County, Ohio, to Deloy M. and Helen S. (Schroder) Speck. Sofia attended school in Ohio and was united marriage to Raymond Sherman Jeffrey on October 1, 1938, at Perrysburg, Ohio. Ray and Sofia moved to Lexington in 1944, where he worked for Platte Valley Products and she clerked for Rosenburg’s and Hennek’s and was a hostess for Parkway Café. They had two sons, Richard and Pat. Sofia was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker who excelled as a cook and seamstress.
Ray and Sofia were long-time members of First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Nebraska and active supporters of Water for Life, a mission group in Kalona, Iowa, dedicated to drilling water wells in Haiti. Together they made multiple mission trips to Haiti. Sofia also made hundreds of blankets and layettes for mission work. They were also long-
time members of Cosmos Pals. After Raymond died on June 4, 1994, Sofia then married North Platte Sherrill, of Lexington, Nebraska, on November 2, 1996, who also preceded her in death on December 10, 2005. In 2008, Sofia moved to Falcon, Colorado to live with her son, Pat. She became a member of Grace Community Church in Falcon, Colorado.
Survivors include her son Richard M. Jeffrey (and wife Sharon) of Lexington, Nebraska; and Pat A. Jeffrey (and wife Joyce) of Falcon, Colorado. Grandchildren include David Jeffrey (and wife Penny) of Oconto, Nebraska; Dennis Jeffrey (and wife Annette) of Prescott, Arizona; Kristina Nass (and husband Mike of Lexington, Nebraska; Clinton Jeffrey of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Justin Jeffrey of Falcon, Colorado. Great-grandchildren include Alyssa and Austin Jeffrey of Oconto, Nebraska; Christopher (and wife Missy) Zambeck of Flagstaff, Arizona; Danielle Zambeck of Winnetca, California; and Nathaniel and Alexandra Nass of Lexington, Nebraska. Sofia is also survived by three siblings, Elsie Hufford of Orange City, Florida, Doris Goodman of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Glen Speck of Perrysburg, Ohio
Sofia was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and her brother, Wayne Speck of Perrysburg, Ohio.
Funeral Services will be Friday, July 30, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Nebraska with Reverend Charles M. Olsen officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lexington.
There will be no visitation.
