James Randolph "Randy" Sands

James Randolph “Randy” Sands, 61, of Punta Gorda, Florida, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. He was born June 5, 1949 at Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Franklin Peter and Audra Jean (Elliott) Sands. Randy graduated from Wheatland High School in Wheatland, Wyoming in 1967. He joined the Army in 1968 until being honorably discharged in 1972, serving one tour of duty in Vietnam with the Blackhorse Regiment 11th Armored Cavalry as a tank driver. Upon his return from Vietnam he attended Indiana University for one year before relocating to Lexington. He was united in marriage to Mary Lewis in November of 1975, at Holdrege, Nebraska. He then moved to Denver, Colorado where Randy worked as a construction supervisor. He remarried in 1981 to Pam Garcia and a son, Tyrell, was born to this union. While living in Colorado Randy was a member of a Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed refereeing basketball. He then relocated once again back to Lexington to be near family and at the time of his death was living in Fort Myers, Florida. Survivors include his mother: Jean Sands of Lexington, Nebraska One son: Tyrell Sands of Denver, Colorado Three brothers: Jeff & Pam Sands of Golden, Colorado Andy & Donna Sands of Greeley, Colorado Scott Sands of Houston, Texas One sister: Sue Ann Sands-Buss and Randy Buss of Kearney, Nebraska One nephew: Sean Sands of Brookings, South Dakota Three nieces: Abby Sands of Denver, Colorado Annah Buss of Omaha, Nebraska Rachel Buss of Kearney, Nebraska One great-niece: Bergen Sands of Brookings, South Dakota Randy was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Peter. The Family has chosen cremation and there will be no visitation. A Memorial Service and Inurnment will be held at a later date at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska over the Labor day Holiday weekend.
