Cornelius “Neil” Francis McCarthy – 69 of Omaha passed away on February 15th at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 on Saturday, February 20th at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington, Nebraska with Reverend Paul Colling officiating, followed by interment at St Ann’s Cemetery.
Family & friends are invited to a dinner after the burial at St. Ann’s Church.
Visitation will be Friday, February 19th from 5pm to 7pm at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
Neil was born to Cornelius and Francis (Mohatt) McCarthy in Broken Bow, Nebraska, on July 5th, 1940. He attended Cozad High School where he was active in 4-H and F.F.A., graduating in 1958.
He married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Lauby, on January 28th, 1961, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington, Nebraska.
Neil was a member of the Lexington Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, The Lexington Jaycees, and the Nebraska National Guard. He served on the Lexington & Gothenburg Police forces until 1966 when he retired after being injured in the line of duty. Neil began a new career in foodservice until 1975 when he started a trucking business. Moving to Omaha in 1991, Neil enjoyed his position as a Software Test Engineer.
After retiring, Neil helped with the daycare Rosemary and he opened in their home, sharing their time and love with many wonderful children over the years. Later in life, Neil enjoyed camping and fishing, often serving as a campground host. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years; sons Jerry and wife Lori of Blair; Chris and partner Jimmy Victor of Omaha; daughter Trueline and grandchildren Kristina, Mason, Evan, and Dominique.
Neil is also survived by brothers and sisters: Tom (Twila) McCarthy of Scottsbluff, NE; Joe (Margie) McCarthy of Ankeny, Iowa; Mary (Harley) Nichelson of Eustis, NE; Jerry (Pat) McCarthy of Buxton, OR; Pat (Tom) Thomas of Olympia, WA; John (Bonnie) McCarthy of Lipan, TX.
Neil was preceded in death by his son Robert Anthony; infant daughter Christine Ann; infant grandson Tyler Anthony; parents; and sister Janet.
Memorials are suggested to the family for the grandchildren’s education.
