Larry J. Nelson, 80, of Callaway, Nebraska, died Monday, July 10, 2017, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Larry was born April 28, 1937, in Grover, Colorado, to Albert B. and Margaret E. (Fox) Nelson. He was baptized at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Callaway, Nebraska, where he was a member for many years. After school, Larry worked for Brown and Denesia Construction Company in Broken Bow, Nebraska from 1958 to 1966. He then went to work for the Village of Callaway for 37 years and retired as Superintendent. After retiring Larry thoroughly enjoyed farming and driving trucks for Pandorf Land and Cattle. Larry was a proud member of the Callaway Chamber of Commerce and Callaway Housing Corporation (Grand Generation Manor) for many years. He retired after 40 years of service in the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department. He was the recipient of the Callaway Civic Recognition Award. He was recognized for his service in Nebraska Rural Water and received the 7 Hats Award from the American Public Power Association during his work as Village Utility Superintendent. Through the years he enjoyed golfing, going to auctions, farming and working on machinery . Survivors include his sister, Carolyn (Frank) Gubser of Irving, Texas; sister-in-law, Lola (Charles) Nussbaum of Grover, Colorado; three nieces, Elizabeth, Karen and Sharon and two nephews, Richard and Paul; special cousins, extended family, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marvin, nephew, Marvin Jr., and an infant sister, Norma Lea. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 4:30 p.m. at Callaway Community Church in Callaway with Pastor Dean Haidle officiating. Private Interment will be held prior in Rose Hill Cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested to the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department.
