Leona Anna McNerny

Leona A. McNerny, 92, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington. She was born June 14, 1917 at Fairbolt County, Minnesota to August Henry William and Amelia (Fredricks) Carstens. Leona attended the Lutheran Church in Elmore, Minnesota. She moved to Kansas in 1929 and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Bird City, Kansas. Leona was united in marriage to James Michael McNerny on March 5, 1938 at Benkleman, Nebraska. While living Bird City, Kansas the couple owned and operated the Sinclair Station until moving to Frontier County, Nebraska in 1944, where they farmed. In 1994 Leona moved to Lexington to be near family. Leona was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery and get-together with family and friends. Leona was quite the spitfire and always had a sharp wit and friendly smile. She will be so very missed by her loving family and all of her friends. Survivors include three sons: William Dale McNerny of Lexington, Nebraska Darrell Lynn (Herdis) McNerny of Puyallup, Washington Douglas Carl (Kathy) McNerny of Madison, Nebraska Two daughters: Deanna Mae Wach of Estes Park, Colorado Zelda Marie (Richard) O’Hanlon of Lexington, Nebraska One brother: Howard Paul Carstens of Florida Two sisters: Velma Esther Kruse of Bird City, Kansas Irma Dorothy Deeds of Colby, Kansas Eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren as well as nieces, n ephews, other relatives and friends. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James and one brother, Maynard. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington, Nebraska with Pastor Michael Gruhn officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Bartley Cemetery in Bartley, Nebraska on Tuesday, September 22. Memorials are suggested to the family or the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
