Bernice I. Vollmer 94, of Kearney, Nebraska, formerly of Sumner, died Friday, May 5, 2017 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. She was born April 14, 1923, in Rural Sumner, Nebraska, to Herbert and Cynthia (Wingert) Wempen. Bernice attended school at Lone Star School in Sumner. Following her time at Lone Star School she was a farmhand on the family farm. Bernice was united in marriage to Virgil Vollmer on April 15, 1940. Two children were blessed to this union; Vonnie & Gary. The couple lived and worked on the farm near Sumner. In 1983, they moved into Sumner. Virgil passed away in 2007 and Bernice moved into the Homestead Assisted Living in Kearney. She then moved into Mother Hull Home in 2013, until her passing. Bernice was active in her church and was a Park Valley Aid. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, quilting and gardening. Virgil and Bernice also enjoyed camping and fishing. She was a member of the United Church of Sumner. Survivors include her children: Gary (Judy) Vollmer of Cozad, Nebraska, and Vonnie (Dale) Martin of Elm Creek, Nebraska; two brothers, Harry (Reva) Wempen of Sumner, Nebraska, and Leonard Wempen of Mexico; two sisters, Pearl (Loren) Schnacker of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Lucille Lange of Lincoln, Nebraska; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Virgil in 2007, three sisters, Opal Freeze, Viola Provolt and Ruth Schnacker. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at United Church of Sumner in Sumner, Nebraska with Pastor Ken Hutson, officiating. Burial will be in Sumner Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to Sumner Rescue Unit or United Church of Sumner.
