Donna D. Boom, 85, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Monday, May 1, 2017, at Lexington Regional Health Center.
She was born November 17, 1931, in Broken Bow, Nebraska to James W. and Maude L. (Perry) Bubak. She grew up and attended schools there, graduating with the Broken Bow class of 1949. While in school she enjoyed band, chorus, Home Economics, and her commercial class. During her high school and senior year she worked for O.J. Heaps at his cream station (she tested cream and eggs, and also sold feed there). After graduation she worked in the Custer County Courthouse in the Public Welfare Office.
She was united in marriage to Gilbert C. Horn in 1950 and the couple resided in the Burr Oak community along the South Loup River south of Broken Bow. To this union three children were born, Timothy Chase, Cyndia Louise, and Benjamin Louis. She enjoyed embroidery, playing the piano, helping with 4-H, and going dancing. She enjoyed oil painting, some of which she sold, but gave many away. In 1975, she married F. Ted Boom in Lexington. This marriage added 7 step-children to her life; Greg, Mike, Steve, Randy, Donnie, Bari, and Susan.
Around 1970, she worked for Larry J. Miles in the Dawson Co. Department of Roads at Lexington until about 1980, when she worked for Orthman Manufacturing for a short period of time. She then worked as a clerk in the District Court’s office in the Dawson County Courthouse from 1982 to 1998, when she retired. She often cared for her grandchildren during these times.
In 2003, she discovered a new and exciting hobby, researching family history. She would often stay up late at night exploring her husband’s and her family histories using many different internet sites. This also led to going to museums and grave sites to continue to “dig up” as much information as possible. Sadly this exciting hobby had to come to a halt when her eyesight began to fail, but that still did not stop her from sharing all the information she had found with her family.
Donna is survived by her loving husband Ted of Lexington, Nebraska; two sons, Tim (Kelly) Horn of Hemingford, Nebraska, and Ben (Barb) Horn of Overton, Nebraska, daughter, Cyndia (Jeff) Boesch of Lexington, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Samantha (Will) Hall, Jason (Amy) Horn, Mandy Horn, Melinda (John) Asebedo, David (Ivie) Boesch, Lucas (Andrea) Horn, Shonda (Cody) Klusman, Chase (significant other, Annie Harouff) Horn, and twenty-three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; also surviving are seven stepchildren and their families, ten step great-grandchildren, and seventeen great-great-step-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Margaret Bubak of Arnold, Nebraska; as well as extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and only brother, Gary, and one daughter-in-law, Tammy Horn.
It was Donna’s wishes for cremation. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
