Jack D. Wieland

Jack D. Wieland, 81, of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, died Sunday, December 18, 2016, at his home at Johnson Lake. Jack was born February 3, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska. His parents were Dr. Gilbert and Gladys E. (Jones) Wieland. He lived the major portion of his life in Hastings, Nebraska. He was a 1953, graduate of Hastings High School, and attended Hastings College. On April 7, 1954, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He played in the Marine Band. Jack was honorably discharged on April 6, 1956. He always had a fondness for music. Jack was married to Joann Preisendorf on January 23, 1958, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Two sons were blessed to this marriage; Jack II, and Gilbert. He was a fireman for the Hastings Fire Department for 27 years. After retiring from the department he did upholstering. In 1985, the couple moved to Johnson Lake. In 1994, Jack opened Putts Place Go-carts at the lake. This venture lasted until 2007. Although retired, he never sat still. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and motorcycle riding. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, a past member of the Tehama Shrine, a lifetime member of the NRA, Plum Creek Waterfowlers, Duck’s Unlimited, and Pheasant’s Forever. Jack is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joann Wieland of Johnson Lake; sons, Jack D. (Celeste) Wieland of Holyoke, Colorado, and Gilbert H. (Shelly) Wieland of Kenesaw, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Jordan Wieland, Dustin Wieland, Geoffrey Wieland, Reiley Wieland, and Chance Widener; one great-grandson, Gunner Wieland. Also surviving are a host of friends. Jack was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 22, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church at Smithfield, Nebraska with Reverend Dr. Cathi Braasch officiating. Burial with Military honors will be in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
