Morris Leo Downin

Morris L. Downin, 94, of Callaway, Nebraska, died Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Callaway Good Samaritan Center where he had been living for one month. He was born August 2, 1914 on the family farm near Lodi, Nebraska to Albert and Milly (Jones) Downin. Morris attended Lower Lodi school through the 10th grade and graduated from Callaway High School with the class of 1932. He then went to Iowa and attended Diesel Mechanic School. He returned back to the farm and was united in marriage to Elsie Armold on June 5, 1940, on her family’s farm southwest of Callaway. The couple was blessed with two children; Carolyn and Norman. Morris and Elsie lived their entire lives on the farm where Morris stayed busy with the farm, gardening and working in his garage fixing and puttering around. If he couldn’t fit it, it had to be junk. He loved to visit with everyone and never knew a stranger. He also enjoyed visiting with friends at the Callaway Senior Center. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Callaway. Survivors include one son: Norman Downin of Oconto, Nebraska One daughter: Carolyn and Jim Ellis of Cambridge, Nebraska Two grandsons: Jim & Joann Ellis and their family of Edison, Nebraska Gale & Megan Ellis and their daughters of Denver, Colorado Two nieces and their families as well as other relatives and friends. Morris was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elsie in 1989; one brother, Ralph and one grandson, Bruce. Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway, Nebraska with Reverend Jerry Schwarz officiating. There will be no visitation, but the casket will be open at the Graveside Service. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
