Gary LaVerne Ross

Gary L. Ross 78, of Callaway, Nebraska, died Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the Callaway District Hospital. He was born February 25, 1938, in Callaway, Nebraska, to Owen W. and Esther M. (Miller) Ross. Gary attended school at Stop Table School through 8th grade and then graduated from Callaway High School with the class of 1955. Gary served the National Guard from 1958 to 1964. Gary was united in marriage to Vivian M. Longmore on June 15, 1963, in Callaway, Nebraska at the United Methodist Church. They were blessed with 4 boys, Vaughn, Rodney, Gene and Blaine. He was a lifetime member of the Morning Star Church. Gary loved his God and truly felt he was put on His Earth to be a good steward of the land. Gary believed in community service and served on many boards including; Callaway School Board from 1972 to 1982, Custer County Feeders/Breeders Association, Callaway Rural Fire District from 1967 to 2001, Elk’s Lodge #1688 and Charter member of the 7 Valley’s Rodeo Association. In 1970, Gary was the recipient of the Broken Bow Jaycees outstanding young Farmer/Rancher Award. Gary loved the land and was thankful for the opportunity to live his life farming and ranching. He was proud to expand the family farm and be able to leave it to the next generations. He was always proud of his sons and grandchildren and their accomplishments. Gary loved to visit. He enjoyed selling feed and seed over many years particularly for the opportunities it offered him to interact with his customers. He was a huge baseball fan his entire life. Some of his fondest childhood memories centered around playing baseball and softball on the Stop Table teams. While farming, he spent many a summer evening listening to the Kansas City Royals on the radio in the truck or tractor. Later in life, watching them on TV was one of his favorite pastimes. Gary also enjoyed Husker football and attended many of the home games. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Vivian of Callaway, Nebraska; three sons, Vaughn (Stephanie) Ross of Callaway, Nebraska, Rodney (Mary) Ross of Callaway, Nebraska & Gene (Julie) Ross of Fremont, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Justin (Jincy) Ross of Lincoln, Nebraska, Amber Ross, Reagan Ross, Trevor Ross & Taylor Ross all of Callaway, Nebraska & Jacob Ross & Jackson Ross of Fremont, Nebraska. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Blaine Owen Ross & infant brother Donald E. Ross. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 1, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Callaway United Methodist Church with Pastor Shanon Williams, officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. at Morning Star Church near Callaway. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway. Memorials are suggested to the Callaway Rural Fire District, Morning Star Church, or Donor’s Choice. Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway is assisting the family with arrangements.
