Edith M. Crowley, 92, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington, after a brief illness.
Edith was born February 27, 1917, to Harry and Helen Joy (Stratton) Barrows in Smith County, Kansas. Her family moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska in 1922. She graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1933, having taken commercial courses instead of teaching courses, much to the dismay of her father. She got her first job in the Webster County Agent’s office. In 1936, she went to work for the Farm Security Administration, where she met her husband A. Keefe Crowley. The two were married October 19, 1940.
The couple moved to Lexington in 1952 to run the Lexington Credit Bureau. Edith took sole control in 1961, when Keefe became the Lexington Postmaster. She also owned and operated Crowley Abstracting from 1958 to 1983. She was honored in 1992 as The Lexington Business and Professional Women’s Club “Woman of the Year” after 50 years of BPW membership.
Edith was very active in her community. She was on the Lexington United Way Board of directors and budget committee, the Lexington Community Foundation Board, and worked with the Dawson County Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. She was a Dawson County Commissioner from 1975-1977, and served on the Lexington Planning Commission and the Lexington Board of Adjustment. Edith was a member of P.E.O. and the First United Methodist Church.
Edith is survived by a daughter-in-law: Ann Hyde Crowley of Houston, Texas
Granddaughters: Maggie Crowley Brown and husband Corey of Houston, Texas
Anna O’Keefe Crowley of Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Mary Stratton Crowley of Madison, Wisconsin
Two great-grandchildren: Tobias and Adelaide Brown of Houston, Texas
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, A. Keefe Crowley and her son, Philip O’Keefe Crowley.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington with Reverend Todd Karges officiating.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 21, 2009, from 2-4 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington. Cremation will follow visitation.
Inurnment will be held later at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Lexington.
