Arlen Whaley, 78, of Callaway, Nebraska, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born November 28, 1930, in the Stop Table community near Callaway, Nebraska, to Sidney Benson and Ann Mary (Johnson) Whaley.
Arlen graduated from Callaway High School with the class of 1948. He then served his country in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge, he attended Kearney State College.
He owned and operated the Country Club in Arnold, Nebraska, then went to work for Harlan County Conservation near Alma, Nebraska. He then owned and operated several taverns around the state of Nebraska. Upon his retirement, Arlen went to work for Oconto Cattle Company, now known as, Custer Feeders. He never thought of this as a job, but more of his hobby.
Arlen was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing and loved being with his three grandchildren and spending time with family and friends. Being in the tavern business most of his life, Arlen developed a keen sense of humor and sharp wit. He loved practical jokes and just having a great time.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Two sisters: Beverley Fellers of Lexington, Nebraska
Valerie Martinez of Lexington, Nebraska
Three grandchildren: Grace, Cade and Margaret Mae

Nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
Arlen was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rodney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Callaway, Nebraska with Reverend Paul Colling & Antony Thekkekara con-celebrating.
Visitation will be held Monday, April 6, 2009, from 4-6 p.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Wake Service at 6:00 p.m.
Burial with Military Honors will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway.
Memorials are suggested to the Family for later designation.
