Georgia Marie (Hansen) Pitkin, 85, of Callaway, Nebraska, died Monday, February 9, 2009, at the Callaway Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.
She was born November 10, 1923, at Milldale, 12 miles northwest of Callaway. She was the seventh in a family of nine children of George and Maria (Klug) Hansen. She received her education at local rural schools through the eighth grade.
On April 28, 1943, she married Cleveland Ira Pitkin at the home of Cleve and Mattie Pitkin at the time Ira was on leave from the Navy. Ira and Jo made their first home on the home place in the cottonwood community southwest of Callaway. Later they moved north of Callaway to the Pine Canyon community. In 1952, they moved to a farm a mile west of Callaway where they farmed, and Ira sold feed. They moved in to Callaway in 1960, to their home on the east side of Morgan Park where they resided until they moved to the nursing home in May of 2007.
Georgia was a member of the United Methodist Church where she did a number of different jobs including being a Sunday school and Bible school teacher.
Georgia loved taking care of her family, relatives and friends. Through the years, she also enjoyed many friendships that were formed in her church committees, HHH Club, card clubs and quilting club. With each new grandbaby, Grandma Jo embroidered and quilted another baby quilt. At last count there were eleven.

Eleven grandchildren: Joe (Amy) Black of Hastings, Nebraska; Sarah (Nate) DeWald of Hallam, Nebraska; Adam (Nicki) Rivera of Sutherland, Nebraska; Brook (Clifford) Cady of Merriman, Nebraska; Jordan (Carrisa) Pitkin of Cody, Nebraska; Megan Pitkin of Lincoln, Nebraska; Amy (Kyle) McAlister of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Leslie (Dan) Hughes of Hamilton, Montana; Angela, Cassidy, and Shawndra Pitkin all of Callaway, Nebraska
Eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
One sister: Katherine Swain of Omaha, Nebraska
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents: George and Maria; her in-laws, Cleve and Mattie; uncle, Peter; two sisters, Adeline and Margaret; four brothers, Henry, Hans, Peter & Wilhelm.
Georgia’s body was cremated.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Callaway, Nebraska with Reverend Doug Jones officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway at a later date.
A Memorial Book Signing and visiting with family will be held Friday, February 13, 2009, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Callaway Community Center.
