Lyle E. Veal, 87, of Kearney, Nebraska, former Overton resident, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2015, at CHI Health Good Samaritan-Kearney. Lyle was born August 29, 1927, in Miller, Nebraska, to Clyde “Lefty” and Hazel (Scranton) Veal. Lyle grew up in Miller and moved to Elm Creek in 1942. He graduated from Elm Creek High School with the class of 1945, Kearney State Teacher’s College in Kearney, Nebraska with his B.S. in 1952, and his Master’s Degree from Kearney State College in 1961. Lyle was united in marriage to Lyllis Kile on May 25, 1947, in Kearney, Nebraska. Eight children were blessed to this marriage; Kaye, Bill, Lynne, Nancy, Cindy, Merry, Bob, and Jim. The family moved to Elm Creek in 1947, to Davenport, Nebraska in 1952, and then to Overton in 1962. He was a teacher, coach and administrator in Davenport and Overton for 42 years, 27 years spent in Overton. He cared deeply for all his students, staff, colleagues, and stayed in touch with many of them. He enjoyed sports and listened to the area ball games on the radio. He especially liked to hear when the Overton Eagles won. He loved to hear about his grandkids and great-grandkids in their activities. Lyle was a member of the United Methodist Church in Overton, the Masonic Lodge, and Tehama Shrine in Hastings, Nebraska. He was also a member of NSAA, NSEA, former Rotary of Elm Creek, and the Lion’s Club of Davenport. Survivors include his children; Kay (Larry) Monks of Limon, Colorado, Bill (Karen) Veal of Lincoln, Nebraska, Lynne (Jeff) Scott of Twins Falls, Idaho, Nancy Richmond of Coalville, Virginia, Cindy Veal of Goodland, Kansas, Merry Butler of Kearney, Nebraska, Bob (Ronda) Veal of North Platte, Nebraska, and Jim Veal of Casper Wyoming; twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, many, many friends, and extended family as well as special staff of Northridge. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lyllis; sisters, Pat Horn & Jeanne Sleicher; grandson, Aaron Smith; sons-in-law, Steve Bowie & Dave Butler; brothers-in-law, Lee Sleicher, Tom Horn, Bob Kile, Ben Kile, Dan Houchin, Art Kile, and James Kile, Jr. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Overton with Reverend Doug Gahn officiating. Masonic Rites by Thistle Lodge #61 will be held at the church. Burial will be in the Overton Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2015, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the Overton Methodist Church or the Shriner’s Hospital.
