Mary Neva “Vollenweider” Barnard, 97, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway, NE on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dean Haidle, officiating.
Mary was born December 16, 1917 the daughter of Herman and Lydia Vollenweider in a sod house on the eastern edge of Redfern table which is some seven miles west of Oconto, Nebraska. The family included brothers Charles and Kenneth, and a sister, Vivian.
Neva attended primary school at District 214, then two years of high school at the Redfern School, continuing at the Callaway High School and graduating with a teacher’s certificate. She then taught one term at District 223. On February 14, 1938 Neva married Ray Barnard, to this union three sons were born, Neville Ray, Allen Wayne, and David Karl. Neva with her family moved from Nebraska to Iowa in 1957, living in Marion until 1994 when she and Ray shared a home near Toddville with Allen until his death in 2001 at which time Neva and Ray returned to Marion.
Throughout the years, Neva has taken much pride as a homemaker and gardener. Both Allen and Neva enjoyed their gardens and especially while working together in their huge garden and orchard at the Toddville address.
Neva was a member and attended the Redfern Evangelical Church where she, sister Vivian, and brother Charles were baptized in a joint ceremony.
Great sadness has resulted due to the loss of her husband, parents, sons, David and Allen, sister, Vivian, and brothers, Kenneth and Charles.
Survivors include her son, Neville “Bernie” and wife Helen, grandson, Ray Herbert, granddaughter, Charlene and husband Edward Allaire, great granddaughters, Catherine and Megan Young, great great grandson, Zane Young-Seibert, granddaughter, Dee and Husband Scott Ommen, sister-in-law, Alice Vollenweider, and several nieces and nephews.
