Mona M. Longly

February 4, 1929 — May 25, 2015

Mona M. Longly, 86, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at Park Avenue Estates in Lexington. She was born February 4, 1929, in Litchfield, Nebraska, to Charles and Erma (Cool) Bauer. Mona attended school in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School with the class of 1946. She then went onto further her education at Kearney State Teacher’s College. She taught for two years, one year at District #49, from 1946-1947, and District N3, from 1947-1948. She worked arm in arm with Ron with their farming and cattle operation. Mona was united in marriage to Ronald E. Longly on June 1, 1948, in Lexington. The couple was blessed with five children; Nick, Jim, Sharon, Deb, and Tom. Mona simply enjoyed life. As a youngster, she enjoyed hunting and playing softball. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grammy. Christmas was her favorite time of year with many family traditions enjoyed, especially her homemade eggnog, trimming the tree, and baking cookies. She loved traveling, cooking, gardening, canning, and public speaking. She was proud of the fact she portrayed Uncle Sam in many parades, schools, and celebrations. She was very active in the VFW Auxiliary, where she went through the ranks from her local chapter, to state department president, to National VFW Auxiliary president. There wasn’t a Memorial Day holiday she wasn’t out and about sharing the Buddy Poppy tradition. She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Dawson Democrats as a state representative, the state board of directors of the Easter Seals, and Kensington Club. Mona was also an active and faithful member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society. You can’t think about the patriotism of our great country without thinking of Mona Longly, and her gratitude for the constitution. She will be so missed.
