Mary Jane Muirhead

Mary Jane Muirhead, 93, of Kearney, Nebraska, former Overton resident, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, at St. John’s Good Samaritan Society in Kearney. She was born May 4, 1921, on the family farm Northeast of Sumner, Nebraska, to Roy H. and Bessie N. (LaBar) Robbins. She was the third child of ten born to this family. She grew up on the family farm and enjoyed raising her ducks, which she sold and used the money to purchase a violin. She attended rural school and graduated from Sumner High School in 1938. After graduating she attended Kearney State Teacher’s College. Following college, she taught at District #77 and Trappers Grove rural schools near Sumner. Mary Jane was united in marriage to Neil Muirhead on March 6, 1944, in Smith Center, Kansas. Two children were blessed to this marriage; David Neil and Jennifer Jane. Mary Jane was baptized in April of 1955, in the Sumner Baptist Church. The couple made their home on a farm north of Overton. Neil passed away February 25, 1966. After his death, she left the farm and moved into Overton and worked for Plectron Corporation. She later got her Real Estate License and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and worked for Gateway Realty. After a short time of living at Wichita Falls, Texas, she returned to Lexington, Nebraska and worked for the county FSA office and Fairbanks International. After retirement, she moved in 2001, to Kearney, Nebraska. She had been a resident of St. John’s Good Samaritan Society for nearly two years. Mary Jane was a member of the Economy Boosters Extension Club. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and tending her flowers. Survivors include her son David Muirhead and his wife Garlan of Overton, Nebraska and daughter Jennifer Stover and her husband Victor of Kearney, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Dan Muirhead and his wife Traci of Overton, Nebraska, Amy Schutz and her husband Vern of Elwood, Nebraska, Amber DeBrie and her husband Justin of Gibbon, Nebraska, Michelle Self and her husband Mike of Gibbon, Nebraska, and Maria Austen and her husband Charles of Kearney, Nebraska; twelve great-grandchildren, Hayden and Dalton Muirhead, Lindsay, Leah, and Logan Schutz, Wyatt and Barrett DeBrie, Ashleigh, Michael, and Terryn Self, and Damien and Royce Austen; two sisters, Geraldine Hazzard and her husband Walter of Kearney, Nebraska, Bessie Ann Robbins of Nevada; and, one brother, John Robbins and his wife Bonnie of Lincoln, Nebraska; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Roy & Bessie Robbins; husband, Neil Muirhead; two brothers, Roy I. and Manley Robbins, two sisters, Elaine Stubbs and Eleanore Russell and an infant brother and sister, and a great-granddaughter, Aliya Schutz. Funeral Services will be Thursday, February 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with Pastor Will Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Overton Cemetery at Overton, Nebraska. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 11, 2015, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington.
