A.Doris Elliott, 94, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Elwood Care Center in Elwood. Doris was born on the family farm near Eddyville, Nebraska on July 10, 1920, to Marion R. and Nellie Viola (Lahm) Marshall. She attended school at Eddyville and graduated from Eddyville High School. She then went onto continue her education at Kearney State College where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in teaching. She was united in marriage to Gerald Elliott on October 11, 1942, in Eddyville. Two children were blessed to this marriage; Marilyn and Gale. The couple lived in Riverdale from 1942 to 1957, when they moved to Lexington. As her health began to fail she moved to Elwood Care Center. She became a part of their family as well as they a part of hers. Doris loved teaching. She taught for two years in Custer County, one year in Buffalo County, and 32 years in Dawson County rural schools. Doris continued to tutor students long after she retired. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington, where she served on various committees throughout the years. She was active in Elizabeth Circle, Delta Kappa Gamma, NSEA, NEA, and the local Teacher’s Association. Doris was a wonderful lady and so enjoyed family get-togethers, the cousin breakfasts for many years and sharing memories and kind words with past students. She loved her many nieces and nephews. She will be so very missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Dale) Burkhalter of Elwood, Nebraska; one son, Gale (Sharon) Elliott of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren, Phillip (Sharilyn) Burkhalter of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, David (Fabianne) Burkhalter of Elsie, Nebraska, Andrew (Frances) Burkhalter of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Sarah (Michael) Anderson of Gothenburg, Nebraska, Michelle Elliott & Michael Wells of Tucson, Arizona, and Renee (Bill) Wiggins of Tucson, Arizona; nine great-grandchildren, Mychel, Kale, Baylen, Corbin, Claire, Rosalind, Lyndsay, Jenna and Kadie; one great-great-grandson, Bryson; four sisters, Arlene Peterson of Kearney, Nebraska, Betty Hagan of Lincoln, Nebraska, Bonnie (Bob) Myers of Broken Bow, Nebraska; and, Lois (Laverne) Leach of Loveland, Colorado; one brother, Bill Marshall of McCook, Nebraska; special friends, Rick (Dee) Walton of Smithfield, Nebraska; and, Mollie George of Lexington, Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald; four brothers, Allen, Melvin, Vernon and Maurice and one sister, Helen. Funeral Services will be Monday, January 12, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lexington with Reverend Dr. Dyton Owen officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 11, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church or Elwood Care Center. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements.
