Melvin J. Streit, 81, of rural Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014, at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Melvin was born September 14, 1933, in Lexington, Nebraska, to Joseph and Maggie (Weaver) Streit. He grew up on the farm north of Overton and attended school in Overton. Melvin was a 1951 graduate of Overton High School. On November 4, 1953, he joined the United States Army, serving until his honorable discharge on November 3, 1955. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Prasch on November 16, 1955, in Lexington. Four sons were blessed to this marriage, David, Paul, John and Steven. The farm was his life. His final harvest was done this fall. Throughout the years the family raised cattle, sheep, pigs, as well as assorted other “farm animals”. Melvin was a faithful member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. He was past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He also was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards, his coffee buddies, woodworking, collecting toy tractors, planting a huge garden, and traveling. Melvin had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be sorely missed. Survivors include his sons; David (Scott Button) Streit of Washington, DC, Paul Streit of Lexington, Nebraska, John (James Wilkin) Streit of Denver, Colorado, and Steven (Kay) Streit of San Francisco, California; three grandchildren, Chelsea (Tyler) Perez of Denver, Colorado, Cody Streit of Fort Ruckers, Alabama, and Levi Streit of Denver, Colorado; one brother, Larry (Janice) Streit of Overton, Nebraska; one sister, Isabel (Ed) Gruntorad of Overton, Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; and, sister, Leona Smith. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 1, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington with Reverend Neal Nollette celebrating. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery at Lexington. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 30, 2014, from 4-6 p.m. with Wake Service to follow at 6:00 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to Nebraska Special Olympics. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements.
