Deon Wayne Fiene, 53, of Elwood, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family, after being diagnosed with liver cancer in November 2013, and a short round of treatment that was discontinued in March after not being successful.
Deon was born October 9, 1960 to Donald and Marilyn (Harm) Fiene in North Platte, Nebraska. He attended grade school in Gordon, Lyons and Norfolk, as his family moved with Northwestern Bell. He began school in Lexington in the 6th grade and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington in 1975. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1979. He was successful in football and shot put, achieving many awards and placing at State in shot put several years. He intended to play football at UNL but a knee injury in the Shrine Bowl kept him from pursuing football.
He worked for Bob Bailey of rural Oxford and bartended at the Cornhusker Club before starting work at Dawson County Dept. of Roads and side lining at the alfalfa mill. He met Sindy Houser at a wedding in December of 1980 and they were married July 16, 1983, and made their first home west of Lexington. In 1987, Deon and Sindy had premature twin girls – Julia Marie and Jacklyn Dawn. Jacki died on July 17, 1988.
In October of 1989, the family moved to Twin Falls, ID to begin a new chapter of their lives, with both working for Dial-net, Inc. While in Idaho, they added Nathaniel Paul in 1993, and Leslee Anna to their family in 1997. During the years in Idaho, he owned Idaho Sunrise Communications which sold cell phones, voice mail, two way radios and long distance service. He also installed phone systems and satellite TV.
They moved home to Nebraska in August of 1999. Deon and Sindy remodeled/restored many homes and eventually moved their current home from south of Eustis to rural Elwood. He worked as a communications consultant for years, installing DirecTV through Dawson Public Power, did phone work and drove truck. He then obtained his insurance license and sold for New York Life. The last 8 years he was a Shelter Insurance Agent in Lexington, having earned Regional awards and a trip to Hawaii in 2009. The one common thread through all of his professions was his love of people and a good story. He was a big man with a big heart and he gave it to anyone who needed a piece of it, an ear to listen or a shoulder to lean on.
Deon was involved in and served in offices of many civic and community organizations beginning with the Jaycees in the early 80’s and through the Lion’s Club presently. He served his church by serving on a variety of boards, including the School Board at Immanuel Lutheran in Twin Falls, ID and was currently an Elder at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He thoroughly enjoyed mentoring young people through the Hunter Safety Program. In the early days, Deon loved to fish and play golf. In later years his hobbies more revolved around whatever projects his kids were involved in.
Deon is survived by his wife Sindy of Elwood, Nebraska; daughter Julia and husband Larry King and their daughters, Abby & Amber of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Nate Fiene of Lincoln, Nebraska; and, Leslee Fiene of Elwood.
