Loy D. Branstiter, 86, of Kearney, Nebraska formerly of Overton, Nebraska, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at St. John’s Good Samaritan Society in Kearney.
He was born July 13, 1927, in Oconto, Nebraska, to Claude and Pearl (Casey) Branstiter. Loy grew up on a farm and attended school in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Loy was united in marriage to Phyllis Bristol on February 19, 1950, in Ansley, Nebraska. Two children were blessed to this union: Victor and Deb.
On January 29, 1953, Loy enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged on January 28, 1961. He graduated with top honors as a mechanic while in the Air Force. Following his time in the service Loy and Phyllis would live the majority of their lives in Dawson County. Loy worked as a cattle feeder for A.C. Philpot for 18 years. He then went to work at Sperry-New Holland for 12 years and before retiring he worked for Overton Sand and Gravel for 11 years.
Loy was a member of the Overton Methodist Church and a member of the 1733 Chorus Kearney Area Barbershoppers for 22 years. He collected tractors, enjoyed working on his word search puzzles and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife Phyllis of 64 years; son; Victor and wife Pat Branstiter of Kearney, Nebraska, daughter: Deb and husband Greg Schmidt of Lexington, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; Jennifer and husband Gene Ripp of Kearney, Nebraska, Stephanie and husband Tim Vogt of Gibbon, Nebraska, Mike and wife Megan Branstiter of Elm Creek, Nebraska, Tim and wife Tami Candy of Grays Lake, Illinois, J.J. and wife Christy Srack of Kearney, Nebraska, Derek and wife Michelle Mullin of Kearney, Nebraska, David and wife Kristin Branstiter of Kearney, Nebraska & Danielle and husband Brian Styskal of Wahoo, Nebraska; twenty one great-grandchildren & two great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; two brothers; Virgil Branstiter & twin brother Roy Branstiter of Lexington, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Verla, sisters-in-law; Pat Branstiter & Melva and husband Walter Florea; brother-in-law; Dean Bristol
Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Overton with Pastor Dennis Wheeler, officiating.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
Interment with Full Military Honors will be in the Overton Cemetery
