Elsie D. Shreves, 96, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away, Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Plum Creek Healthcare Community in Lexington.
She was born November 19, 1917, near Norton, Kansas, to Fred and Dorthea Elizabeth Poppe. She was one of 11 children. She grew up 10 miles from Norton and attended a Lutheran Church ¼ mile from their house which was the center of their social lives.
Elsie was united in marriage to Otto Shreves on September 23, 1934. Three sons were born to this marriage; Stanley, Steve and Stuart.
She always worked throughout her life; some of her jobs included, Draft Board for 25 years, Plectron in Overton, Nebraska, Tri-County Hospital, and Sperry New Holland.
Elsie enjoyed cooking, keeping up on current events through reading the newspaper, visiting with family and being with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lexington. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone.
Survivors include two sons; Steven Shreves of Tempe, Arizona and Stuart Shreves of Lincoln, Nebraska; one living sister, Leotha Jacobsen; three grandchildren; Brenda Roloff of Minden, Iowa; Bruce Shreves of Lexington, Nebraska; and Lisa and husband Mike Romine of Keller, Texas; seven great-grandchildren; Spencer, Betty Jean, Kellee, Laysa, Aaron, Austin and Avery; two great-great-granddaughters, Jenna and Isabella; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Otto; and son, Stanley; as well as nine siblings.
The family has honored Elsie’s wishes for cremation. There will be no visitation.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 7, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Lexington with Pastor Megan Morrow officiating.
Inurnment will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska at 2:00 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
