M. Elizabeth Zimmerman, 92, long-time Lexington school teacher, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014, at Elwood Care Center in Elwood, Nebraska.
Elizabeth was born October 2, 1921, in Nelson, Nebraska to Henry and Nova (Thomas) Hite. She graduated salutatorian in 1939 from Nelson High School. Elizabeth attended the University of Nebraska for two years before marrying Kenneth Zimmerman. After two years of college, she started teaching in Nelson in 1947, before moving to Lexington to teach, in 1953. By attending summer school she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree and eventually a Masters of Education Degree both from the University of Nebraska.
In Lexington she taught mostly at Pershing Elementary School, until she retired from teaching in 1986.
She was a member of Chapter AN PEO and Delta Kappa Gamma where she was the past president of both, Eastern Star where she was past Worthy Matron, and Daughters of the American Revolution; she was also active in the Grand Generation Center in Lexington.
Elizabeth enjoyed Nebraska football and held season tickets for 45 years. Elizabeth also enjoyed traveling both in the United States and internationally.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. James Zimmerman and wife Tracy of Clemson, South Carolina and Dr. Robert Zimmerman and wife Peggy of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Mikki Weldy and her husband Ken of Herndon, Virginia, Bruce Zimmerman and his wife Julie of Raleigh, North Carolina, Beth Hewes and her husband Michael of Northglenn, Colorado, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Nova Hite and her sister, Carmen.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lexington with Reverend Dr. Dyton Owen officiating. PEO Memorial Ceremony will be conducted by Chapter AN, Lexington.
Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 14, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
