Howard D. Wood, 79, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington, with his family by his side.
He was born May 1, 1929, at Lexington, Nebraska, to Albert Harold and Gertrude Mary (Westbrook) Wood. Howard grew up in Lexington and attended Lexington schools.
On July 25, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lila Hill in North Platte, Nebraska. To this union two children were born, Kerry and Kevin.
Howard worked as the chef at Cornland Hotel and Parkway Café for 17 years. He then worked a variety of jobs throughout the years and then retired from the Nebraska Department of Roads in May of 1991.
He loved being outdoors; it was when he felt closest to God. He enjoyed camping, fishing, telling stories, writing poems and spending time with his family. Howard will be so missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Lila Wood of Lexington, Nebraska
One son: Kevin (Teresa) Wood of Columbus, Nebraska
Son-in-law: Mark Hunt of Lexington, Nebraska
Seven grandchildren: Amanda (Wes) Duval of North Platte, Nebraska; Kelly (Jason) Meridith of Columbus, Nebraska; Bradley (Michelle) Sheets of Grand Island, Nebraska; Brandy (Eric) Samuelson of Omaha, Nebraska; Bridgette (Abel) Flores of Dumas, Texas; Rebekah and Tyler Hunt of Lexington, Nebraska.
Nine great-grandchildren and two on the way.
One sister: Joan Newton of Lexington, Nebraska
One sister-in-law: Ila (Bill) Dillard of Indio, California
Many nieces, nephews and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kerry Hunt; Brothers, Harold, Lyle, Dale, Richard, Willard and Gene and two sisters, Thelma and Irene; one great-grandson, Kaleb Dean Meridith.
It was Howard’s wishes his body be cremated.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 11, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church with Pastor Joe Masten officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lexington.
