Marvin M. Phelps, 91, of Callaway, Nebraska, passed away Monday, February 10, 2014, at Callaway Good Life Center.
He was born October 12, 1922, at North Platte, Nebraska, to Burt and Edith (Calhoun) Phelps. Marvin attended school and graduated from North Platte High School. Following graduation, he worked on the farm with his father before joining the United States Army. He served his country during WWII from May 29, 1944, until being honorably discharged on May 12, 1946. Upon his return to the states he worked as a fireman for the railroad.
Marvin was united in marriage to Eloise M. Henry on June 12, 1949, in North Platte. Two children were blessed to this marriage; Paul and Mary. They farmed in the Stop Table community from 1950 until 1972 when they moved to a farm south of Callaway where they built a home.
Farming was Marvin’s life and he enjoyed every aspect of the farm. He also enjoyed their cabin at Jeffrey Lake where he loved fishing and spending time with the family. One of his most notable accomplishments was being able to go to Washington D.C. on the Hero’s Flight to the see the WWII Memorial as well as visit with fellow veterans and take in all the sites.
Marvin was a member of the United Methodist Church in Callaway, the American Legion and Eagles Club.
Survivors include one son; Paul (Susan Muchmore-Phelps) Phelps of Kearney, Nebraska; one daughter, Mary (Bob) Foster of Indianola, Nebraska; three grandchildren; Jim (Lana) Phelps of Callaway, Nebraska; Mark (Lindsey) Phelps of Callaway, Nebraska; and, Julie (Chad) Sybrant of Gibbon, Nebraska; two step-grandchildren; Tony (Lori) Foster of Sidney, Nebraska; and, Trevor (Dana) Foster of Ogallala, Nebraska; as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Eloise; brother, Glen; half-brother, Gerald; sisters, Arlene & Betty; and, grandson, Christopher.
The family has honored Marvin’s wishes for cremation. There will be no visitation.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be Thursday, February 13, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with Reverend Roger Gillming officiating.
Inurnment will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with Full Military Honors at 2:30 p.m. that same afternoon.
Memorials are suggested to the Callaway American Legion or Callaway Good Life Center.
