Glenna Mae Zern Craig, 85, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Plum Creek Health Care Community in Lexington.
She was born on May 16, 1928, in rural Minden, Nebraska, to Jim and Esther (Edmunds) Johnson. She attended grade school at District #15 and graduated from Minden High School. On January 28, 1951, she married LaVern Zern of Upland at the Minden Presbyterian Church. Two boys, Richard and Michael were born to this union. They resided in Minden until moving to Overton, Nebraska in 1979. While in Minden, Glenna worked for the telephone company for 15 years, and later worked at Baldwin Manufacturing in Kearney, Nebraska for 7 years.
Glenna was a member of Minden Presbyterian Church, Overton United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church in Lexington. She helped with both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, reading, walking and most of all the Saturday Morning Coffee Group with Overton friends.
Glenna was always making cookies and had a cookie jar full when she babysat grandchildren or when friends stopped for a cup of coffee. She shared cookie recipes with many friends and said “rusks” were her favorite.
LaVern Zern died August 26, 1999. On October 18, 2006, she married Reverend John Craig in Lexington, Nebraska. They lived at the Shackley Retirement Village in Lexington before moving to Wel-Life Assisted Living in April of 2010. Glenna moved to the Plum Creek Care Center in August of 2012. Reverend John Craig died September 12, 2012.
Survivors include her sons; Richard (Shelley) Zern of Overton, Nebraska and Michael (Tracy) Zern of Lexington, Nebraska; five grandchildren; Kayla Spontanski of Ashton, Nebraska; Michael Zern of Lexington, Nebraska; Jennifer Zern of Lexington, Nebraska; Jacob Zern and Josh Zern both of Foster, Nebraska; two great-grandchildren; Logan and Lucas. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Lillian Johnson; nieces, nephews and stepchildren; Heather (Craig) Oldsen of Ponca, Nebraska; John Clark (E.J.) Craig of Denver, Colorado; Jessica Ann Craig of Newburgh, New York; and, Paul Craig of Anchorage, Alaska.
Glenna was preceded in death by both husbands; parents; brothers, Edsal and Norris Johnson; and, sister, Norine Haynes.
The family has honored Glenna’s wishes for cremation. There will be no visitation.
A Graveside Memorial Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Overton Cemetery in Overton, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Dyton Owen officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the Family for later designation.
