Carl David Schwarz, 81, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Cozad, Nebraska.
He was born January 8, 1932, on a farm Northeast of Smithfield, Nebraska, to Frank and Dorothy (Woodside) Schwarz. He attended school at Smithfield through the 8th grade and through “Operation Recognition” earned his honorary high school diploma from Elwood High School. Carl served his Country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from September 9, 1952 until his honorable discharge on June 19, 1954. He was honored with the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal as well as the Combat Infantry Badge.
Carl was united in marriage to Lucy Netzel on January 8, 1955, in Lexington. The couple later divorced in 1978. Seven children were blessed to this marriage; David, Teresa, Ronald, Anthony, Kathy, Charlie, and Troy.
Carl spent his entire working career at David Harum Flour Mill where he worked his way up through every position in the company, except for a short time when he worked at Monroe Auto in Cozad and farmed near Oconto for a couple of years. After retiring from the flour mill he drove truck for area farmers.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion and the Eagles Club.
Carl enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, watching old westerns, fishing with his brothers, and enjoyed having a beer or two with friends at the Veteran’s Memorial Club.
Survivors include four sons; Ronald Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; Anthony (Naomi) Schwarz of Kearney, Nebraska; Charlie (Denise) Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; Troy (Angela) Schwarz of Gothenburg, Nebraska; two daughters, Teresa (Gary) Smith of Gothenburg, Nebraska; and, Kathy (Tim) Lord of Indianola, Nebraska; fifteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren with one on the way; daughter-in-law, Vicky (Jeff) Weber of Alliance, Nebraska; three brothers; Mike Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; Kenny (Shirley) Schwarz of Elwood, Nebraska; and, Eugene (Nancy) Schwarz of Ft. Collins, Colorado; two sisters, Alice Wenburg of Lexington, Nebraska; and, Martha (Wally) Hubbard of Lexington, Nebraska; four sisters-in-law; Phyllis Schwarz of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Judith Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; Cindy Schwarz of Arapahoe, Nebraska; and, Shelby Schwarz of Lexington, Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; three grandchildren; Nathan, Natalie, and Nicole; four brothers; Harry, Robert, Ray and Keith Schwarz; two sisters-in-law, Helen Schwarz and Sandra Schwarz and one brother-in-law, Floyd Wenburg.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 15, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington with Reverend Neal Nollette officiating.
Burial will be that same afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 14, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warriors Project or the Heartland Military Museum in Lexington.
