Babe R. VanCura

Babe R. VanCura, 78, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Lexington Regional Health Center. He was born October 7, 1934, in Elsie, Nebraska to Henry and Lola (Ramsey) VanCura. Babe attended school in Elsie and Ogallala. In May of 1957, Babe joined the Nebraska National Guard until being relieved of his duties in 1966. Babe was united in marriage to Shirley Finn on May 6, 1960, in Arthur, Nebraska. Four children were blessed to this marriage; Randy, Corrine, Scott and Marla. The family moved to Lexington in 1976 from Ogallala. Babe worked for the State of Nebraska, Department of Roads from 1961 to 1976, in 1976 he went to work for Sperry New Holland in Lexington until 1984, and retired from Orthman Manufacturing in 1996. After retiring, Babe did the mowing for the Lexington Optimist Rec Complex for 5 years, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Babe enjoyed woodworking, quilting, yard work, gardening and being with his family and teasing the grandchildren. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife of 53 years; Shirley of Lexington; sons; Randy VanCura of Logandale, Nevada; Scott VanCura of Lexington, Nebraska; daughters, Corrine (Ed) Adams of Garden City, Kansas; and, Marla (Scott) Arp of Bertrand, Nebraska; one brother, Delmar (Deanna) VanCura of Ogallala, Nebraska; one sister, Betty Davis of South Barre, Vermont; sister-in-law, Charlotte VanCura of Colorado Springs, Colorado; eight grandchildren; Nicholas (Carrie) VanCura of Lincoln, Nebraska; Nathan VanCura of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jason (Amanda) Adams of Montana; Ashley Adams of Montana; Kayla Arp of Holdrege, Nebraska; Alissa Arp of Bertrand, Nebraska; Matthew Adams of Garden City, Kansas; and, Diana Arp of Bertrand, Nebraska; along with nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Babe was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Henry, Jr. and Charles. A visitation will be held Monday, June 10, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington. Babe’s body will then be cremated and a Memorial Graveside Service will be held in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
