Karen M. Shafer, 59, of Overton, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney following a short, but hard fought battle with cancer. She was born August 24, 1953, in Lexington, Nebraska to Robert D. and Clarice (Eby) Bamrick. Karen grew up in Overton where she graduated from Overton High School with the class of 1971. On September 21, 1974, she was united in marriage to Lee Shafer at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington. Three sons were blessed to this marriage; Kody, Brady, and Colt. Karen worked for Plectron Corporation in Overton following high school in the computer department, and with Lee cooking, managing, and running Shaf’s Place in Overton. She and Lee then started Triple S, a company named after their three sons that manufactured tools and vinyl fence and also did some farming. She loved to cook and probably fed almost everyone in the town of Overton through the years. Karen was always her sons’ biggest cheerleader when it came to their activities, she also enjoyed entertaining, having the family over for holidays, doing puzzles, playing games, potted flowers, and belonging to the Coffee Cup Bowling League. Karen was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be so very missed. Karen is survived by her husband of 38 years; Lee Shafer of Overton, Nebraska; three sons; Kody (Jenny) Shafer of Colorado Springs, CO; Brady Shafer of Denver, CO; and, Colt (Katie) Shafer of Grand Island, NE; two grandchildren; Kaden & Claire Shafer of Colorado Springs, Co; parents; Bob & Clarice Bamrick of Overton, NE; brother and sister-in-law; Bob (Nancy) Bamrick of Overton, NE; step-mother-in-law; Iona Shafer of Sumner, NE; Special Niece; Niki (Eric) Altwine of Bertrand, NE; three sisters-in-law, LaDonna (Ken) Cartland of Los Angeles, CA; Linda Frederick of Verdigre, NE; and, LouJean Smith of Scottsdale, AZ; two brothers-in-law, Layne Shafer of Overton, NE; and, Lance Shafer of Beaver City, NE; other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Rodney Bamrick; sister-in-law, Dianne Bamrick; nephew, Pat Bamrick; brothers-in-law, Gary Frederick and Mike Smith; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donald & Oralea Shafer. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 20, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Overton High School Gymnasium with Reverend Paul Colling officiating. Burial will be in the Overton Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 5-6 p.m. with Wake Service to follow at 6:00 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the Karen Shafer Memorial Fund designated to Lay-a-way Angels, Make-a-Wish Foundation, or the Overton Fire Department.
