Matt Dukes, 38, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at Lexington Regional Health Center.
Matt was born March 20, 1974, in Aurora, Nebraska to Wilson and Judy (Anderson) Dukes. He spent his early childhood on the farm outside Aurora and attended grade school in Aurora. In 1983, Matt, his parents and brothers, Wilson, III, and Michael, moved to rural Lexington where he attended District #16 school through the 6th grade and then Lexington Middle School. Matt graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1992. He was a member of the Lexington Chapter of Future Farmers of America. Matt joined the workforce in the early 1990’s at the former 6th Street Food Market. He enjoyed the people he met and the friendships he made with his coworkers. In the mid 1990’s, he began his career with Walmart where he continued to work until his passing. He enjoyed his career and those he worked with, making many great friends.
Matt was an avid comic book collector. He was so enthralled with them that he and his father made a cross-country trip from Lexington all the way to Dallas, Texas to attend a comic book convention. He also enjoyed professional wrestling with C.M. Punk being one of his favorite wrestlers to follow. Matt made frequent trips to the TNA/MMA wresting events when they were in the area. Matt also enjoyed watching movies, especially the new movies based on the comic books that he collected. He would “critique” the movies based on the comic story and making sure you could find Stan Lee’s cameo appearances.
Matt recently purchased his dream vehicle, a 2010 Ford Mustang, GT, which he took great pride in driving around town. He used to joke that he wasn’t used to driving such a nice vehicle that turned heads, he was always looking behind him to make sure nothing was falling out of his vehicle like it did in his old truck.
Matt’s other love in life was his family. He spent time with his father watching movies and wrestling and helping his mother. But, his favorite enjoyment was spending time with his great-nephew, Mycah James. Matt and Mycah’s favorite past time was reading books, their favorites were “Marvin K.Mooney” and Dr. Seuss books.
Matt is survived by his parents, Wilson and Judy Dukes of Lexington; brother, Wilson, III of Lexington; brother, Michael and wife Cammi Dukes of Waunita; niece, Ashley (Preston) Holbrook of Lexington; nieces, Michaela Dukes and Gennie Crowell of Wauneta; nephew, Gage Crowell of Wauneta; Aunt and uncle, Emily (Tom) Mersch of Aurora; aunt and uncle, Debbie (Larry) Johnston of Chapman; aunt, Kathy Blath of Lexington; great aunts, Doris Plummer of Central City; and, Myrtle Buller of Aurora; and numerous cousins and other friends and relatives.
