Fahy E. Wadkins, 91, of Lexington, Nebraska, formerly of Phillips, Nebraska, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington, where he had been a resident for two weeks.
He was born September 20, 1916, in York County, Nebraska, near Blue Vale, to Wiley R. and Bertha M. (Kindcaid) Wadkins.
Fahy moved to Phillips when he was 6 months old and graduated from Phillips High School with the class of 1934. He worked for his dad in the grocery store and was united in marriage to Velma Walker on November 2, 1940, at York, Nebraska. Four children were blessed to this union; Marion, Dennis, Douglas and Marty.
In 1942, Fahy entered the United States Army, serving his Country in the European Theater during WWII, upon his discharge in 1945, he went to work for the Postal Service, serving as Postmaster in Phillips until retiring in 1972. He also worked for Sutters Dairy in Grand Island.
He was a member of Keystone Masonic Lodge in Phillips for 50 years and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars.
The couple moved to Lexington in 1999, to be near their son.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years: Velma Wadkins of Lexington, Nebraska
Three sons: Marion Wadkins of Grand Island, Nebraska
Dennis (Jane) Wadkins of Grand Island, Nebraska
Douglas (Theresa) Wadkins of Lexington, Nebraska
One daughter: Marty Martin of Lawton, Oklahoma
Five grandchildren: Kim Wadkins and husband Todd Meyer of Gibbon, Nebraska
Butch and wife Jennifer Evans of Grand Island, Nebraska
Patrick & Michael Wadkins both of Lincoln, Nebraska
Amy and husband Steve Whitefoot of Atoka, Tennessee
Ten great-grandchildren: Cody, Hannah, Patrick, Alyssa, Jessica, Jacob, Chase, Justin, Jordan and Morgan.
Fahy was preceded in death by his parents; one great-granddaughter, Tyna Wadkins; 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
It was Fahy’s wishes his body be cremated.
A Memorial Graveside Service will be held Friday, February 22, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Phillips Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Marta Wheeler officiating. Military Honors will also be present at graveside.
There will be no visitation.
