David Rodney “Big Nuts” Lawhead, 61, of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, passed away suddenly of a heart attack, Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Lexington Regional Health Center in Lexington.
He was born December 29, 1951, in Jamestown, New York, to Donald and Marcia (Gustafson) Lawhead. He grew up and attended school in Oneonta, New York, graduating from Oneonta High School with the class of 1970. Following graduation, he worked in the kitchen at Gimble’s Department Store.
In the 1970’s, Dave moved to Tucson, Arizona where he managed several restaurants and met his future bride, Peg Glenn. The couple was married February 14, 1982, in Tucson. Two sons were blessed to this marriage; Chris and Steven. In 1989, the family moved to Lexington. It was this same year he began his career at the Veteran’s Memorial Club as the manager, he held this position until the club’s closing in 2011. Dave made the club fun and the wonderful food was a well-known staple around the area.
Dave was a member of the Lexington Optimist Club and the Lakeside Country Club. He enjoyed sports, especially the Nebraska Cornhusker football team and the Arizona Wildcats basketball team, golfing and cooking. Dave loved “men talk” and was a faithful friend to his buddies. His greatest love was for his wife, sons and grandchildren, and the kids at the day care center.
Survivors include his wife; Peggy Lawhead of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; sons, Chris (Kara) Lawhead and Steven Lawhead of Lincoln, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Moriah, Gabriel and Isis Lawhead of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother, Donald (Patricia) Lawhead and their children, Michael, William and Kelly all of Tuscon, Arizona; one sister, Dorinda (Fred) Puttlitz of Boca Raton, Florida; mother-in-law, Dorothy Glenn of Lexington, Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law.
It was Dave’s wishes that his body be cremated and there will be no visitation.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held Monday, February 4, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with Reverend Caroline Vickery officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the family for the education of Dave’s grandchildren.
