Glenn L. Rohde, 79, life-long resident of Eddyville and Sumner, Nebraska, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at Callaway Good Life Center.
He was born March 9, 1933, the 5th child and 3rd son of Roland and Mayme (Anderson) Rohde in Eddyville. He graduated from Eddyville High School with the class of 1951, and went on to further his education at Kearney State Teacher’s College, graduating in 1955. Glenn was a 4-year letterman in football and track.
Glenn was united in marriage to Madeline Felker on December 28, 1954, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Eddyville, the couple was blessed with three children, Jennifer, Mike and Douglas. Madeline preceded Glenn in death on May 18, 1996. He then married Jo Ann (Porter) Dobesh on May 30, 1998, in Sumner.
He entered the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict on August 22, 1954, where he attained the rank of 1st Lt. and was stationed at Quantico, Va. and later Camp Pendleton, Ca. Upon his return to Nebraska, he taught Industrial Arts at Callaway, as well as assuming coaching and principal duties. He farmed and ranched 4 miles west of Eddyville for the next several decades. He was proud of the fact that he was recognized for his prized Angus cattle and usually topped the sale at the Lexington Livestock Market. In 1991, Glenn and Madeline moved to Sumner, but continued to farm and ranch with his son, Douglas.
Throughout Glenn’s life he was always active in the community; serving 20 years on the SEM school board, 16 years as director for Production Credit Association of Broken Bow, 8 years on the Sumner Coop board, 10 years on the Dawson County Farm Service Agency committee and a member of the American Legion and volunteer for the Eddyville Fire Department. He was inducted into the Dawson County Cattleman’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
His passions were his family and farm, the University of Nebraska at Kearney Alumni Association, and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He also enjoyed boating and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; Jo Ann Rohde of Sumner, Nebraska; daughter, Jennifer (Mark) Opfer of Blair, Nebraska, their daughters, Hannah and Samantha; sons, Mike Rohde of Lakewood, Colorado; Douglas (Barb) Rohde of Eddyville, Nebraska, their children, Ashley (friend Derek) Rohde, Joshua & Jacob Rohde and Ashley’s boys, Carson and Cohen.
Stepchildren; son, Dale (Kathryn) Dobesh of Ansley, their daughters, Anne (Thomas) McCaslin, daughters, Kenna and Halle, Julia (Alex) Bauer; son, Joe (Paige) Dobesh of Hastings, Nebraska; daughter, Amy Bren of Sioux Falls, SD and her children, Nathan, Megan, and Allison, and Mark (Roxann) Dobesh of Sioux Center, Iowa and their daughter, Jacobi.
Sister, Elaine Burr of Gibbon, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Bernadine Sullivan of Eddyville, Nebraska; and, brother-in-law, Dale Fuestman of Amherst, Nebraska.
Glenn was preceded in death, other than his first wife, Madeline, by his parents; brothers, Howard Rohde and Homer (Aileen) Rohde and sister, Genevieve Fuestman.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Eddyville Community Center with Pastors Ken Hutson and Dave Irwin co-officiating.
Burial with Military Honors by the Eddyville American Legion will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 18, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at the Eddyville Community Center.
