Dean Shadel, 91, of Callaway, Nebraska, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, at Callaway Good Life Center. Dean was born August 5, 1921, to Samuel B. and Bertha Ellen (Wells) Shadel, on a ranch south of Callaway, Nebraska. He grew up in the Callaway area, graduating from Callaway High School with the class of 1940. He lived in Wyoming and California before entering the United States Army, serving in the European Theatre. While serving in France and Germany, he was awarded the Bronze Medal with five battle stars. After the war, he returned to Callaway and went to work for the Hunt Telephone Company, which later became Great Plains Communications. He spent the next 45 years in this business. On August 11, 1946, he was united in marriage to Ann Walker in North Platte, Nebraska. To this union three children were born, Charlynn, Sue & Neil. Dean was a quiet man, but an active man. He was a member of the Callaway American Legion for over 50 years, a member of the Callaway Village Council and past Mayor, past president of Boy Scouts of American, an active member of the United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher for 40+ years, a 10-year member of the Callaway Board of Education, a 4-H leader for 22 years, and was a charter member of the Lions Club, the Callaway Rodeo Association and the Callaway Coffee Club. Dean loved his horses and rode pastures for local ranchers and farmers after his retirement. He has often said, “When you are on a good horse on a high hill looking over the hills, valleys and fields you are awfully close to God”. Dean is survived by his children; Charlynn (Dick) Behrends of Broken Bow, Nebraska; Sue (Randy) Stratton of Callaway, Nebraska; and, Neil Shadel of Pocatello, Idaho; six grandchildren, Scott (Shawna) Behrends of Broken Bow, Nebraska; Kimaree (Bernie) Woodward of Broken Bow, Nebraska; Stevi (Clayton) Rawles of North Platte, Nebraska; Kara (Patrick) Henry of Pocatello, Idaho; R.D. Stratton and Travis Stratton of Kearney, Nebraska; ten great-grandchildren and one on the way; two nieces, and many, many friends. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ann; and one sister, Betty. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with Pastor Roger Gillming officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway with Military Honors. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at the Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway. Memorials are suggested to the Shadel Family for later designation. Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway is in charge of arrangements.
