Virginia Ann Carey, 90, of Kearney, Nebraska, formerly of Overton, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012, at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
She was born August 13, 1921, in Overton, Nebraska to John Patrick and Gertrude Della (Leek) Carey. Virginia grew up in Overton and continued to live there with her father until his death in 1981, and then by herself where she was embraced by the community. She then moved to Kearney and lived in assisted living for three years.
Virginia moved to St. John’s Good Samaritan Center where she remained until her passing, she was loved by staff members and family alike. To say she was a positive person would not do justice to her always optimistic attitude, even in times of great distress she was always “fine”. She was a voracious reader, liked to needlepoint and crochet and loved fishing Bullheads with her father. Sports were another of Virginia’s loves, Husker football and baseball were her favorites. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Overton.
Virginia is survived by her sister Gertrude (Gitch) Beatty of Kearney, Nebraska
Sister-in-law: Mary Carey of Lincoln, Nebraska
Five nieces and three nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jack and Norval Carey and one sister, Billie Cox.
It was Virginia’s wishes that her body be cremated and there will be no visitation.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney, 1623 Central Avenue, with Reverend Katherine Bullard and Reverend Michelle Reed officiating.
Lunch will follow the service with graveside services at the Overton Cemetery after lunch.
Virginia's wishes were all memorials to be given to Special Olympics.
