Doyle Franklin Hemphill, 86, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Sunday, February 12, 2012, at his home in Lexington.
He was born February 10, 1926 at Oconto, Nebraska to Lynn and Ada (Newhouse) Hemphill. Later the family moved to Cozad where he attended school. On June 15, 1944 he married Elaine Hueftle of Eustis. To this union 7 children were born. In August of 1944, Doyle enlisted in the Army serving overseas in Europe during WWII earning the Bronze Star. Doyle was honorably discharged in May of 1946. After the War they lived in the Lexington area for most of their married lives. Elaine died on June 4, 1989. On July 22, 2000 he married Ruth Robinson of Lexington. Ruth died on February 3, 2008.
Doyle loved spending time with his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He loved going on the truck with his son Jay. He enjoyed playing cards, bingo and going to the casinos with his sisters. He enjoyed traveling to see his daughter and her family in Maine. One of Doyle’s greatest moments in his later years was the Hero Flight to Washington D.C. with his son, Jerry.
Survivors include 4 sons: Jim Hemphill of Omaha, NE; Jerry (Marilyn) Hemphill of Cozad, NE; Jay Hemphill of Lexington, NE; Jon Hemphill of Council Bluffs, IA; daughters, Janice (Ken) Knecht of Omaha, NE; Joyce (Mike) Eaton of Buxton, ME; June Hemphill of Council Bluffs, IA; stepson, Dean Zimmerman of Mesquite, TX; stepdaughters, Sharon (Bob) Forrester of Arnold, NE; Charlene Zimmerman of Lexington, NE; Doris (Kim) Simons of Bellevue, NE; 10 grandchildren, l6 great-grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and 23 step-great-grandchildren. 3 sisters, Pauline Coover and Clara Lantz of Lexington, NE; and Kay Naylor of Cozad, NE; sister-in-law, Donna Hemphill of Gering, NE.
Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, 2 brothers, 1 sister and 1 great-granddaughter.
Funeral Services will be Friday, February 17, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with Evangelist Mike Millican officiating.
Burial with Military Honors will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 17.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 16, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
Memorials are suggested to the Family for later designation.
