Alfred Rudolph Meyer, 79, of Lexington died November 27, 2011 in Lexington. He was the son of Rudolph and Lydia (Sasse) Meyer of Smith County, Kansas. Alfred was born March 12, 1932 on a farm near Athol, Kansas. He was baptized April 10, 1932.
In 1950, Alfred enlisted in the United States Air Force, and in 1952 he was deployed to Great Britain. The British Road Service went on strike, and for the next four years Alfred and 364 other servicemen, known as the Third Motor Transport Squadron, were ordered to travel throughout Great Britain moving freight. He and his squadron were stationed at the Ayrshire Hotel in Aryshire, Scotland. There, in the mornings, some servicemen would walk across the street to a tea house and have breakfast. And, it was there he met Jessie McCulloch who worked at the tea house. Jessie remembers the infamous American servicemen who dunked donuts in their tea and raised eyebrows at the tea house. Nevertheless . . .
On August 11, 1955, Al and Jessie were married in Patna, Scotland. Following Al’s honorable discharge from the Air Force, Al, Jessie and their daughter, Yvonne, returned to America and moved to Kansas to help at the family farm. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Nebraska where Al began his trucking career traveling from coast to coast until his retirement. He was a member of the Nebraska Trucker’s Association, where he served on the Safety Board. Lexington has been the family home for over 50 years.
In retirement, Al still enjoyed driving. He drove the Handi Bus and served on the board. He made deliveries across the state for a local manufacturer. In retirement, he also enjoyed wintering in Brownsville, Texas with Jessie and traveling to Third Motor Transport Squadron reunions. Alfred loved people and enjoyed his many friends from across the nation. He could also tell you where to find the best pie in every town!
Al is survived by his wife Jessie of 56 years; four children Yvonne (Dennis) Rickertsen of Lexington, Raymond (Judy) Meyer of Elwood, Deb Farmer of Columbus and Rick (Mona) Meyer of Cozad; twelve grandchildren, Kathryn (Ricardo) Segovia, Christine and Rebecca Rickertsen, Nathan Meyer, Chad (Jessica) Meyer, Justin (Lauren) Meyer, Christopher Meyer, Julie (Ethan) Banning, Katie Farmer, Kurt Farmer, Allison Baker, Erin Meyer and two step-grandchildren Stacy (Steve) Aitken and Matt (Deidra) Welch, and 10 great-grandchildren. Alfred is also survived by two sisters, Doris (Vernon) Kuhlman of Kensington, Kansas and Marlene Meyer of Houston, Texas and two brothers Gilbert (Sharon) Meyer of Athol, Kansas and Raymond (Bertha) Meyer of Bertrand, Nebraska.
Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his parents and sister and brother-in-law Gerald and Lela Bethke of Stuttgart, Kansas and special family friend Linda Skala.
