Berenice L. Libal, 94, of rural Lexington, Nebraska, died Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington. She was born December 7, 1916, at Hebron, Nebraska to Benjamin G. and Bertha (Ahlschwede) Velte. She grew up in rural Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School. She graduated from the University of Nebraska and taught school at Virginia, Nebraska and Bayard, Nebraska and then Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Wilson Libal in 1941, and they soon returned to a farm near Lexington. Berenice was a member of Buffalo Grove Presbyterian church and had a strong faith. She believed in the importance of education. Berenice helped many 4-Hers with speeches and demonstrations throughout the years. She taught Sunday school classes and tutored students with school work. She was an avid reader and loved to garden. She was a lifetime member of the Hillside Hustlers extension group. She is survived by her children: George (Melissa) Libal of College Station, Texas; Gene Libal of Lexington, Nebraska; Cheryln Libal of Lexington, Nebraska, and Janet (Ron) Schlattmann of Alliance, Nebraska. Also grandchildren: Annette (Matt) Fitzgerald of Clinton, Nebraska; Mike (Angie) Schlattmann of Kearney, Nebraska; Robert Libal of Austin, Texas; Joe Libal of Lincoln, Nebraska; Erin Libal of Lincoln, Nebraska; two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mildred Carmichael and Alma Bede and brother-in-law, Harlan Lueck, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Berenice was preceded in death by her husband Wilson; grandson, Jason Libal; granddaughter, Shelby Libal; parents; sisters, Belva Commins, Ruth Qualey, Mary Downey and Luella Lueck. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church near Lexington with Ethel Fox, C.L.P. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2011, from 4-8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church or Dawson County 4-H.
